System Config Utility Keeps Opening at Startup

In XP Pro, the System Config Utility keeps opening at startup after doing a
selective startup. The SCU is listed in
:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
but not listed in System Info/software environment/startup programs. I've
run Kellys-Korner VB script file which didn't stop the SCU from opening at
startup. Msconfig is not listed itself in startup items.

Should I manually delete the msconfig entry in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run?

Thanks,
Len

Yes.

While you are there- make note of how many other items are listed under the
Run and the Run Once keys. You may want to do a little housecleaning while
you are there.

I deleted the msconfig entry in the registry, rebooted, and it's back. Where
to now?

This is normal with msconfig set to Selective Startup to start at boot.

Msconfig is intended to be used as a troubleshooting tool. If you are done
troubleshooting, open msconfig and remove the Selective Startup and set to
Normal Startup and msconfig won't start at boot.

I guess that after I deleted the msconfig entry in the registry and
rebooted, and the SCU started again, I forgot to uncheck the "don't show
this again" box. After checking the box and rebooting, the SCU no longer
starts or at least the selective startup box no longer shows.

Many Thanks,

System Info is not a very useful thing here as elsewhere. The entry
that matters is the one you refer to in registry's Run (for MSConfig).
But usually when you get the dialog at boot, check the 'do not show
again' box, and Exit, which removes that entry

Note that the entry is restored whenever you run MSConfig and exit with
OK, even if you made no change. If you are 'just looking' exit by
Cancel instead

Also avoids the reboot your computer now message. ;-)
