I have 2 hard drives and if i take one out i have the message Boot Error
insert system cd. I am guessing that the boot record is on the HD that I want
to take out and i need to know how to create a system cd that will allow me
to boot off of that one HD.

When both disks are installed, what is the system drive
letter and the "SystemRoot"? You can find out like so:
- Click Start / Run
- Type cmd {OK}
- Type set system {Enter}

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;307654#4

When prompted, enter the number of the Windows installation to log onto and remember the drive
that it was associated with. Example, The Recovery Console showed 1: C:\WINDOWS
Now, at the Recovery Console DOS command prompt, type the following, substuting your info :
FIXBOOT C:

If you type FIXBOOT /help, you'll see the syntax of the command and what it does.

When it's done, type EXIT shut down the computer, and remove the drive you want out.
Don't forget to reset the jumpers on the Windows HD. If you has the Windows drive set as a
slave, you need to set the jumper to master or remove it altogether.

Is that going to make the partition active?
