i have tried to do a system backup with the backup wizard and i keep getting
an error. i want to back up to a cd or floppy. how is this accomplished? it
does not tell me what the error is that i keep getting. i have the xp home
edition along with the usual programs, bought this thing at office depot.

i suppose i will do just that! this is the first negative in my book about
microsoft products. i am surprised about this. they should want us to back up
with outside media. not everyone can afford to buy new software everytime
there is a loss in the computer. maybe something for them to think about!
thanks, ted.

You could also follow the advice in the Knowledge Base article and backup to
a folder on your hard disk, then use XP's CD burning capability to burn the
backup to a CD or DVD. Now your backup is in two places - good idea.

Sorry if Windows doesn't do enough for you. For others, it does too much.
The courts, for example.

ted, don't get me wtrong. i adore microsoft! i will try your idea. thanks
for the help.

I don't do system backups because the software to do it is almost $100 at
CompUSA. I tried to find FREE software to do it and never did.

I do backups of my address book and all my personal files to cheap CD-Rs.
There were a few times over the years I was glad I did. CD burners sure are
better at it than the old floppies. Now with the hundreds of pictures, PC
info, MP3s, gardening info, downloaded programs etc. I couldn't live without
a CD burner. When my HD failed last Feb and HP had to replace it, I lost
very little but of course had to reinstall everything and get it back the
way I like it.....

Yes, I agree MS should provide some way for us to do a "system backup" and a
few other things. I had to get a free Spellcheck for OE for example.

I didn't see anything about doing a "system backup" to a folder at that
website, and there is nothing in the helpfiles on my PC regarding it either.
Windows XP for Dummies doesn't mention it. FIND does not find it on my
PC/WXP-HomeSP1.
Where is it located?

Symantec's 'Norton' brand software is widely discounted and rebated. To give
some recent examples: Staples recently sold Norton Systemworks 2005
Premier - which includes Ghost 9.0 - for nothing, after rebates. I bought it
for my Dad. The rebates arrived within 4 weeks.

I recently purchased Norton Ghost 9.0 standalone from Buy.com for 3.99 after
rebates, with free shipping.

There are many other excellent backup programs available on the Internet for
free or at very low cost. To give just one example, look at the free
SyncBack program available at:
http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/syncback-hub.html.

With all the outstanding software available for little or no cost, only
fools don't backup.

## You lucked out. I *have* ran across deals on CDs and floppies - never
"good" software like Norton. All I see are old Games etc. I got $20 in
rebates on Norton System works 2002 (in 2002) - still cost $60. With my
husband semi-retired we have to watch every dollar we spend now.

## I just downloaded it. :-) My husband and I will check it out tomorrow.

To me, it is cheaper in the long run to just buy the media
that ntbackup will recognize. I use a rather large USB
external harddrive.
Those discounted softwares will not usually do the job
in WXP. I have wasted too much money on software
that doesn't do the job.

Funny...I've been using Ghost without a hitch for two years. I also got a
terrific price on Easy Media Creator and Zone Alarm Pro, and they work great
for me. Haven't paid a dime for Norton Antivirus since 2000, and I've never
been infected with a virus. I wonder what it is that I know that you don't.
