I am waiting to install service pack 2 because I do not know how to make a
system back up as the window recommends. Ihave looked in help, but see
nothing.

Its called "system restore"
it lets you save a "restore point" to come back to in case
start/all programs/accesories/system tools

Surely a system restore is not the same as system backup. I also am holding
on to my downloaded SP2 update before installation for the same reason.

A surf around provided this:

I am still none the wiser on how to do a system backup because my HP PC came
with Windows XP Home already installed so I do not have the required CD-ROM
to follow instructions. Plus if the above article is anything to go by, XP
Home does not get the same kind of backup as XP Professional when using the
CD-ROM!

I'm off to explore the HP online support with regards to the XP home backup
required before installation of the SP2 pack.

Can anyone please help us resolve this issue?

It's windows speak, you backup by selecting restore, you shut down by
selecting start etc.
If ms made cars, you would select reverse to go forward, ok once you get
used to it.

Fine ...have it your way
go to start/all programs/accesories/system tools........there is back up...click
on it
now back up to the HD whatever SP2 tells you to
Then copy/burn that file to a CD or DVD
there you go all done.
Of course if you have XP pro you can back up directly to a CD
or maybe your Computer supplier did not deem it necesary to put the back up
program on your system you will then be required to find and buy one.
OR you can just use the restore program (which everybody has)and take a
snapshot of your system and saves it so that IF anything goes wrong you can
RESTORE to that point.
good luck which ever way you chose

I have XP pro on my home computer and I get the same "bad file name message"
as evryone else (that's the reason I'm looking in these messages). From what
I've figured out, to back up everything, I need to get an external hard
drive, or save it on the computers hard drive (say on the desktop) and then
COPY it to the CD burner. Is this right?

Well, except that anywhere *but* the desktop would be a good choice. I
believe that the desktop icons and files are included in the profile,
so you would have a rather large profile! Make a directory
(c:\backups?) and stick it there. Your backup may be several GBs, so
may take up several CDs.

Cheers,

Cliff
