Anyone seen this before? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, going crazy here...

XPProSP2 on all machines. Nothing fancy, no special software installed.
I map X: to \\Server\Share

Problem is: when browsing folders on X: with explorer, only some of the
folders show up! And in those folders only some files show up, and in
some folders nothing at all! I cannot see a pattern in what is shown,
what is hidden.

Checked and double-checked file attribs (no hidden files), file
permissions, share permissions.

DIR in CMD fails to see even some fails, always finds nothing:
Directory of X:\libraries\
File Not Found

However I can CD to the invisible folders from both CMD and explorer.

Reproduced when MachineA and Machine B are the same, and same user.
Reproduced on three machines.

What on earth is going on?

Thanks for any hints...
