Should there be anything in windows\sys32\tools?
This folder is empty but every time I boot I get a windows
alert box stating the file windows\sys32
\tools\delfolders.exe could not be found.
I close the window and all then seems to be ok but how can
I stop this happening?

I don't even have that folder in my XP version. Obviously
something has installed it on yours, a program you've
recently installed or uninstalled perhaps. Have you used
the restore option ?

This is a remnant of a program or a virus (the latter most likely). Click
Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to the following Registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

In each of these keys, look in the right pane for a value that references
delfolders.exe or the full path and file name in the error message. Right
click it and select Delete. Repeat until you've gone through all 3 of the
above keys.

Try Start>Search>Files Type in Delfolders.exe If it finds any
go from there. Nothing on mine!! Joe R

The folder does not exist on my system. This sounds like some tidying
up program set to run by third party software (possibly tidying up after
an installation). I'd look with MSConfig.exe in its startup page for a
line trying to load the thing, and uncheck. Also an up to date AV
check, just in case

Thanks for the tips. To summarise:
I went into msconfig/startup, unchecked everything and
brought them back one at a time.
The startup item 'REBOOT' appears to be the culprit. When
selected it causes the problem.
Looking in REGEDIT under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\RunOnce
I found in the last one only a program named 'EXECUTE'
with data: windows\system32\tools\delfolders.exe
I deleted it but when I restart it always appears again
when I have 'REBOOT' selected.
I now run with 'REBOOT' deselected and have no problems.
(Since the system seems to look for this delfolders.exe,
what would happen if I give it this program? i.e. copy and
rename a small, harmless .exe program and drop it in this
folder?
