Yes you should be able to show the day and date by making your task bar
larger. make sure that the task bar is not locked by right clicking on the
task bar and make sure that lock taskbar is un-ticked
then you can click on the edge of the taskbar and drag it upwards to make it
a little larger. you should also be able to see the date and day on the
taskbar now

notification area and also keeps your clock exactly on
time. Its shareware and can be found at:

If you drag the taskbar to the side (left side seems best)
you can make it about one inch wide and the time, day and
date will show all the time.
