I personally have no experience with Windows XP home
edition...I use 98 myself and am quite happy. But my Dad
just bought a reconditioned pc (pent 3) with Win Xp
already installed. Problem is he ended up getting a virus
and was corrupting his system...so I thought the best way
would be to fix this would be to reformate and reinstall
Windows. So he went to the place where he bought the pc
and they gave him a burnt cd copy of the windows he had
installed on his pc..(not the original) but with the same
license #. So I then proceded to reformate and try to
reinstall...well I managed to reformate and it seemed to
reinstall the copy they gave me...but during the set up it
came up with this error message:

sxs.dll: syntax error in manifest or policy
file D:\1386\asms\1000\msft\windows\gdiplus.man
on line 4
Error: Installation Failed
D:\1386\asms.
incorrect function

Now I am no computer professional... but to me that means
that there is a missing file it needs to do the setup...
is there anyway around this mess that i have created??? Or
do I have to go and get a whole new version of Windows?
Help me Please!!!

OOOppppssss Any solutions to this problem could someone
please e-mail me at (e-mail address removed) thanks

If you receive a set up error message similar to the following:
sxs.dll: syntax error in manifest or policy
file D:\1386\asms\60\msft\windows\common\controls.man on line (some
number)

Error: Installation Failed

Your cd-rom or dvd drive cannot read the XP Setup disc. Swap the cd or dvd
reader drive for a newer one and try again. That's how I resolved the error
on a Compaq Presario 5000. Once you get XP installed, you can re-connect the
original drive.

Thanks bubba! But I am not sure how to switch my cd drive
to a newer one... if you can could you explain how to do
that it would be muchly appreciated!

The easiest think to do is borrow or buy an external cd-rom drive. Anything
else means you have to open the PC case which means you have some knowledge
about swapping computer components. If you are not comfortable with swapping
components, you will need help or take your pc to someone that can.

If you have another cd-rom or dvd reader, do the following:
1. turn off your pc and unplug it from power source;
2. set master, slave, cs jumper on substitute drive to match jumper setting
on your existing drive;
3. move data cable (usually gray flat cable) from your existing drive and
connect it to substitute drive;
4. move power connector (the one with red and black) to substitute drive;
5. reboot your pc.
Note: if the data or power cables are too short, you may need to set the
substitute drive on a cardboard box near your pc. The whole idea of this is
to install XP and to do that you need a temporary drive that will read the
setup disc. When you have successfully installed XP, you no longer need the
substitute drive; and you may reconnect your existing hardware.
