I have a portable disk drive. I have a directory and subdirectories
on this drive which I use to copy files between home and work.

Is there an easy, quick way to only copy files that aren't on my
computer from this disk drive?

Hi,

Click Help & Support and search on "synchronizing files".

Hi,

Click Help & Support and search on "synchronizing files".

Right now I do two types of synchronizing:

1. I run BackStick.bat that copies a bunch of wide spread files to a
memory card, and home.bat that copies them to my other computer. That
second batch file copies one subdirectory back, and I have to remember
whether to move them elsewhere to stop this process. It appears
that Briefcase is a GUI application with a lot of finding and dragging
required - can I automate this process so that it can run like a batch
application?

2. I copy a whole bunch of files to a disk as a backup. Then I copy
them to my 2nd computer. These are mainly my photo album, but
include other stuff in My Documents. This appears to be more
applicable to a GUI application. I used to fit these on a CD, but
now use a re-writeable DVD. Will Briefcase work with DVD yet? I
can't get Windows to write to my DVD and use Nero for those backups.

Hi Howard,

1) If you are using WinXP Pro, then you can setup an automatic
synchronization using the offline files feature. You'll find the option on
the offline files tab of Folder Options.

2) For that kind of functionality you need packet writing software, not
something included in WinXP.

When dragging a folder, I get asked what I want to do about files that
exist in the directory being dragged to. Options to replace are Yes,
Yes to All, No, and cancel.

I just did a test. I copied a directory to a test directory. Then
I added a new file in my old directory. I dragged the old directory
to the new directory with the desire to copy my new file only. When
it asked me the above question, I said "no", and the drag stopped.

I wanted a "no to all" option that would copy all files that are not
being replaced.

Is my only option to synchronize the directories?

Read the above posts re file synchronisation, tried it myself many
times via briefcase and the horrible Synchronisation Wizard amongst
others. FFS what the hell is an "offline file" it confuses me every
time I see the term and I have been using PCs since 3.1 so I am not a
novice. Lost count of the times I lost the plot and synchronised a
folder into last week because of the stupid (IMO) terminology
confusion.

Best app I found for doing exactly what you want in the way you
specify AND speaks English AND is so simple I can trust my severely
computer challenged boss to do a synchronisation without major hand
holding.

Synchromagic

Uses the Terms "Target Files" & "Source Files" and has all the options
you require to synchronise anything to anything via any sort of
network including an FTP hook up. Its a joy to use easy and quick.
