Synchronize files (deleted local files) help!

I have a laptop that was configured by an IT guy in another state. He
set it up to synchronize files to the server in that state, but I never
connect to that server. I was tired of seeing the error when
synchronizing files, so I went into settings and disabled it. To my
horror, My Documents has disappeared. I asked the IT guy but he
couldn't understand why my files disappeared.

I have a lot of work in those folders. Is there any way to retrieve it?
I tried running some data recovery software, but the files did not
show up as deleted.

To give you more info:

Start->My Documents is there, but it tries to point the server.
c:\documents and settings\user\My Documents is missing. If I search for
my files, they are not found.

Is there a cache file or something that was deleted?
