How do I prevent Word from changing *p* to a bolded P? Also, I would like to know how to insert a box with an "x" in it.

*p*
Tools => AutoCorrect Options (or AutoCorrect) => AutoFormat as you type
(tab)

Box with x in it:
This is called a checkbox.
Insert => Symbol

There are a number of ways to make clickable checkboxes in documents /
templates. Take a look at the Checkbox template available at
http://addbalance.com/word/download.htm for an exploration of these.

Oops:

Should have said:
*p*
Tools => AutoCorrect Options (or AutoCorrect) => AutoFormat as you type
(tab)
In the middle section, uncheck "*Bold* and _Italic_ with real formatting."

We've been to the "Auto Correct" area and tried changing the *p* to *p*, to no avail. So, I still need to know a way to work around this problem.

I understand that a box for checking is called a checkbox. I worded my question in that manner because I'm describing a box with an "x" already in it.

I think you missed the step that said,
*p*
Tools => AutoCorrect Options (or AutoCorrect) => AutoFormat as you type
(tab)
In the middle section, uncheck "*Bold* and _Italic_ with real formatting."

He sent an update that probably came in after you read the first note.

On the checked checkbox, Charles's recommendation to Insert --> Symbol is
also valid. I found a checked and an X-ed checkbox in Wingdings.

O.K., we found the X-ed checkbox in Wingdings, just as you said. However, even with the "Bold and Italics" unchecked in the Auto Correct function, the *p* still changes to a bolded P.

Whoa... I just found that little sneaky option in TWO places: under the
AutoFormat tab AND under the AutoFormat As You Type tab. For a minute, I
thought I was seeing things (the way the tabs rearrange themselves as you
click through can be really disorienting!).

Does that work?

However, even with the "Bold and Italics" unchecked in the Auto Correct
function, the *p* still changes to a bolded P.
