Some how the SYMBOL option is missing from the INSERT menu in WORD 2002. How
did that happen and how can I get it back or restore the default settings
from all menus?

Are you sure it's missing? If you have adaptive menus enabled, then the
Symbol option might be hidden if you haven't used it lately. If you click on
Insert, is there a black downward-pointing triangle at the bottom of the
menu? If so, click on it and see if Symbol is down there. If the option
really is missing, then see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/RestoreMenuCmd.htm.

OK, FYI this is what happened.

I had inadvertantly removed the SYMBOL... command from the Insert menu. This
is how I did that.

On another computer I had assigned a shortcut (CTRL, ALT , -) to the symbol
for division. I forgot that this computer didn't have the same shortcut
assigned. When I pressed (CTRL, ALT, -) it deleted my SYMBOL command. I found
this out after I restored the SYMBOL command, then tried again to assign the
same keys to the symbol for division, and I saw that those keys had been
assigned to "delete command from menu"

thanks for your help. it works fine now.

The destructive cursor CTRL+ALT+Hyphen is an essential feature and the only
method of removing entries from (say) the Work menu. It should be used with
care and not reassigned to other functions.
