Ok, has anyone run the Symantec Worm Removal Tool ? What do you have to
do to get it to run successfully?

Greetings:
I have run in successfully on 14 computers(friends of mine at work) with
great success. If you follow to the letter the instructions given on the
Symantec web site I think you will find that it works really well. I
successfully removed the Blaster worm from the above mentioned computers.
Some things to consider, and these certainly pertain only to my humble
experience and remembering that for the sake of time on the computers that I
was successful in removing the worm, I ran the removal tool simply from a
<floppy> on the aforementioned computers. I did the following, might not
work for you, so proceed with caution and follow all directions given from
the Symantec site. When at the site to download the removal tool, choose save
file to your <A> drive , making sure you have a blank formatted disk in the
<A> drive. Turn off system restore under windows XP. Not at bad idea either
to create a new restore point naming it something like: Before running the
worm removal tool. On the computers I was successful with, I chose to do the
following.I disconnected the computers from having access to the Internet by
simply either removing the broadband connection or dial up connection by
either disconnecting the cable connection or phone line connection from back
of the computer. I then booted into safe mode. (When restarting the machine
on most computers (not all) this can be done by pushing the F8 key after you
hear the first or second pre-post boot up beep you hear. Then chose to start
in Safe Mode by using your up and down arrows. Your desktop will look funny
,etc. Icons will be big and fussy possibly ,that is natural. When there put
in the removal tool that is on the floppy into the A drive and double click
on the .exe file you downloaded from Symantec. It will then start scanning
your machine and if the worm is there it will fix it. You will get a report
back telling you if it found the worm and in my cases tell you that it fixed
two files, one in the registry and one other i cannot recall. If it does not
say this report , it is possibly true then that you are not infected. Either
way then please download the Microsoft Patch that will prevent re-infection.
The patch and its location is listed in many places within this news group.

I hope this helps and please remember I am just a little step above a
<novice> and my advice is of such. This is only what has worked for me in
the past, and in no way intends that it will work for you. Many others in
this newsgroup especially some if not all of the MVP's have many wonderful
web pages with I am sure much better advice than mine, but as I am one who
is always asking questions, I thought i would throw my humble two cents in
as to be a contributing member of this group instead of just one always
asking for help.If i have missed anything, any step, I feel sure others on
here will correct me which I look forward to their comments, as constructive
criticisms is the only way I love to learn. For without mistakes , we never
learn, without change we never grow, and without growth, we soon shrivel up
and become bored. I hate being bored. Just my cheap bit of "psychobabble"
gleaned from all my years of work in the field of Forensic Psychiatry :)

Good Luck

Respectfully
