Symantec to Ditch Sygate Firewall

Do firewalls need to be updated? ie. if not updated will they still
protect the pc? I use sygate and am quite happy with it.

So am I, but what if somebody finds a security leak? Without any
support it won't be fixed...

There is no reason to panic. I am using SPF 5.5 build 2710 which was the
last Sygate firewall that was security patched. Any changes since then
have been purely cosmetic.

I also run Kerio 2.1.5 next to it, and each firewall catches behavior
that the other one misses. There are no conflicts and no excessive usage
of resources. People say you can't, and shouldn't do this. I used to
believe the same thing until I tested my firewall(s) at
firewallleaktest.com. Kerio and Sygate together provide a level of
security that was rarely matched by even the best commercial firewalls.

I have to wonder about this move. Was the buying, and subsequent dumping
of the Sygate products just a move by Symantec to eliminate a competitor
it saw coming up that it feared?

Q: Why is top posting frowned upon?

My current killfile: aafuss, Chrissy Cruiser, Slowhand Hussein, BEN
RITCHEY and others.
No adware, cdware, commercial software, crippleware, demoware, nagware,
PROmotionware, shareware, spyware, time-limited software, trialware,
viruses or warez please.

Zone alarm free version would not allow networked computers to talk to
each other which is why I changed to Sygate which does work with
networls.

Problems with Free ZA in a network was one of the reasons that I
stopped using it. (It being bloatware and being called "the AOL of
firewalls" were some of the other reasons. Oh yes, and the fact that
it messed yEnc up at one time and it took ZoneLabs two builds to fix
it...) The computers could "see" each other, but for some reason I
kept losing my internet connection and had to reboot the router every
time to fix it. After I installed Sygate I never had any problems...

So what free firewall can we use now?

Zone alarm free version would not allow networked computers to talk to
each other which is why I changed to Sygate which does work with
networls.

What good free firewall works on a network?

Zone alarm will work on a network but it will not work with Internet
Connection Sharing.

The answer is both Yes and No. It's not something that you need to do every
day, week, or even month, but they do need to be updated every now and then.
If you don't do so, as new ways emerge to use the net, and as operating
system updates alter the way your computer interacts with its network
connection, the protection offered by your firewall becomes permiable. It
still protects you against all the old threats, but won't necessarily do
much about the newer ones.
So yes, you do have to update firewalls, but no, it's not something you
need to worry about immediatly.

Thankyou for that.

Sorry - that is the bit I missed out on in my original post - I had it
worling off line but could not get the second computer to use the
internet connection on the other computer

That will teach me to reread what I wrote before posting!!

..... snip .....
I also run Kerio 2.1.5 next to it,
..... snip .....

I went to Kerio site and found this:-

CUSTOMER ALERT
Kerio Personal Firewall is being discontinued on December 31, 2005.
While Kerio will continue to support this product for all customers
through 2006, we will not be actively developing any new features or
functionality going forward.

Where can I download SPF 5.5 build 2710?

Thanks in advance,

Hal

I'm not suprised by this-Symantec already has non-free solutions such
as Norton Personal Firewall.

Not that this is a bad thing, but that's 5.6 build 2808.

Yeah - I noticed that after I posted, whoops - sorry! But like elaich
said, I think most of the changes since the 5.5 2710 build are
relatively minor.

I'm now seriously considering building a Smoothwall box as I've enough
old machines and nics laying about to put one together. Not that this
would remove the need for personal firewall software on each box on my
LAN for outbound notification...

Just a matter of finding the time to put it together!

Where can I download SPF 5.5 build 2710?

well, if you insist on it you can maybe download it in one or two days.
I have problems with uploading files to my FTP site, but that should be
solved in the next days.
I hope to give the download link in the next days.
I'm trying to upload spf2710 and spf2810 or else my FTP site has some real
problems.
Give me some time.
