On starting my machine, a msg appears saying that NAV/NIS is deactivated use
norton prog to fix this, once machine has completed oppstart all is ok. has
this prob. been noted before with xp.

don't you?
And the answer to that question is yes. Symancrap products are
malware, and should be promptly removed from any computer that has had
the misfortune to have Symancrap products installed on it.
