I know that Symantec has apparently included some code in
via liveupdate to work with xp sp2. However, I can't seem
to get it working. SC sees Symantec AV but cannot monitor
its status. I am running the latest definitions(8/18) on
this machine. Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks in advance for any feedback....

If Symantec Antivirus' status is not being reported correctly by the
Security Center, you need to upgrade to SAV 9. According to Microsoft, SAV
8.1 and lower is on the list of programs that behave differently when
running under SP2 due to compatibility issues. In this case the status of
SAV is not reported correctly. SAV 9 is fully compatible with SP2 and the
Security Center reporting issues do not occur with that version.

I believe that Symantec has only updated NAV2004 for this. 2003
doesn't work.

But, as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter much. NAV 2003
still works fine with SP2. The Security Center's inability to
monitor it doesn't mean a thing to me. I don't need XPSP2 telling
me whether NAV is getting updates, since I'm very much aware of
this on my own.

I feel the same away about the Security Center's telling me that
I have a firewall on and automatic updates on. I know the status
of these things by myself, and software monitoring of them
doesn't help me at all. Of all the changes and additions in SP2,
I think the Security Center has the least value, at least to
those who have some experience in what they are doing. To a real
beginner, who doesn't understand the issues, or know what's
running on his computer, its value is, of course, greater.

symantec claims that all their software conforms to and works with sp2. Tey
are also offiering a bridge in the east river at a reasonable price.

Bravo.
