Started windows xp this morning and before windows started my computer
started a scan disk without any prompting from me. It is a Dell 8400 with
windows xp and service pack 2. I stopped it once by holding in the power
button but as soon as windows started so did the scan disk. It is a endless
scroll of
"bad links of lost chains in cluster (up to 1,450,000 so far)corrected:
My computer has been running sevsn hours so far.
Dell support sent me to the microsoft scan disk help page but it was of no
help.
Any advice would be appreciated.

7 hours....Dont let just about anything run for more than an hour, unless
youre
positive its actually running...Try,installing xp cd,boot to xp
cd,recovery,select
1 For disk C: Press enter for password,type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru,20
minutes or so,type:EXIT Let xp start up.Basically this can/could be run
before
xp starts (as its doing with youre system),however in recovery it
repairs,chks,
the disk in less time and is far more efficient..

Andrew E. is an idiot and a troll who gives bad advice. As Bruce
Chambers told you, your hard drive is probably failing. You can confirm
this by using a diagnostic utility downloaded from the hard drive mftr.
Do a thorough test and if the hard drive fails any physical tests,
replace it.

Used Andrews advice and the second time I ran skndsk it worked and my
computer rebooted to windows and runs fine now.

Thanks Andrew.
