I have a new faster machine but I want to use the
exisitng hard drive from my old machine. Both have
windows xp home. Both are 80GB and are recognized
correctly in CMOS. My old drive starts to boot, then
offers the boot optons screen. No matter what I select,
the system shutsdown after the screen displays a 4 or 5
second countdown, then it tries to reboot again. I have
tried the jumpers (all set correctly) as well as anything
else. If you are knowledgeable about this problem I would
be keen to hear from you. Sean

If the old hd is a boot drive containing the o/s you will have to do a
repair install of winxp, you may also have to activate using phone method.
If the o/s is an OEM copy you cannot transfer it to a new sys!

Sean,

Try booting up in safe mode. Press <F8> when you see
the windows selection and count-down screen. If this works
go to your hardware settings under control panel. Under
control panel select system icon then select harware
settings. Check to see if your drivers are all set
correctly. If they are not use the CD that came with your
new system to load the drivers.

If the reason you want to use the 'old drive' is becasue of all your 'persdonalisation' files, internet access, etc. Then simply use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

Create a file on the old PC and then use that file and import it using Files and Settings Transfer Wizard on the new PC.

This is a lot simpler than having to do 2 Reapir installs [ one on each PC] for XP.

Just a little note in case you don't know how to find or use that File
and Settings Transfer Wizard. Insert your Windows XP CD, choose
Additional Options, then you should see Transfer Files and Settings. Use
the wizard to make a backup. You can burn these files to CD depending on
size or transfer through other means. Once you get the files over to
the new computer, you can use the same wizard to restore the files and
settings ;)
