My old PC (XT?) had a switched mains outlet for switching on and off
external equipment, as the PC was powered on and off e.g for speakers,
printer monitor etc.. Why do modern ATX PCs no thave this feature??

It would be a fairly simple matter to take a feed of 5 volts from a spare
USB to power a relay switching mains to printers , speakers and monitor,
when the PC was tuned off all other equipment would also go off. This seems
such a simple and logical idea I wonder why no one seems to do this. It
would save a lot of crawling around under desks to unplug etc..

Any thoughts ??

there is no need for it as most folks just turn off everything at the
power strip or UPS.
not only that...with all the extra hardware we have today the wiring and
switch ratings would have to be increased
