Switch user - chokes

Pixel Warrior

On switching users, this computer freezes for a time - nothing responds to
any mouse or keyboard command - for up to 10 or so minutes. Then suddenly
all of the keystrokes register, and you can see all of the windows opening
at once, sometimes multiple instances, depending on how many clicks were
used.
There are no error messages.
Can't find a reference to this exact issue in Google, tried a few different
search terms. Any ideas?

Using AIM?

Does the user you are switching from have memory-hogging programs open?
Try closing open programs and try again.
 
I have tried it both with Fast User Switching on and off - the problem
occurs in both scenarios.
