Whenver I try to use My Computer it searches for items and then it says one
instance of svchost.exe needs to terminate. And my computer has a startup
problem too, I wonder if it's conflicting with my firewall because that's
what it seems to get stuck on it startup for a good 3 minutes. Last time it
did this, I just restarted my computer but now, it won't go away.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew.

I ran both Norton with latest updates and Ad-aware and didn't find anything.

Andrew,

Try HijackThis, and expert advice.
HijackThis <http://www.tomcoyote.com/hjt/>

Create a separate folder for HijackThis, such as C:\HijackThis - copy the
downloaded file there.

Then, run HijackThis ("Scan"). Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save the
HJT Log.

Finally, have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the
following security forums (and please post a link to your forum posts, here):

Hey Chuck...and others...

I posted on the other board...

SO, enjoy.

Andrew,

Given the possibility that simple malware scanning doesn't find anything of
interest, try looking at what's running and causing you problems.

Get Process Explorer (free) from
<http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml>. Provides way more
information than Task Manager. And Autoruns (also free, and also from
SysInternals) <http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/autoruns.shtml> will
show you specifically what process are started automatically.

Then see if you can spot the svchost.exe instance that's giving problems. Under
Properties - Services, you can find out what services are involved.

For a good reference to the many system services, see
<http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm>. For discussion about most
processes in general (what is each one, what does it do, is it necessary), just
type it in to your favorite search engine. Anything dangerous is probably being
discussed somewhere on the web.
