I've read everything I can find here. I'm not very technical. I have a new ThinkSeries IBM. I have run Norton and it seems I'm clean. svchost.exe is shut down everytime I boot up. In addition I need to scan for virus' from the 2004 Norton disc because for some reason I can't get that to install properly. Any advice?

Go to www.blackviper.com and check out the services configurations for XP.
As for your problem with Norton, get your money back. Norton is notoriously
fussy about systems and installations. You can get just about everything
Norton is offering you and spend nothing at all. I use AVG Anti-Virus, free
edition. You can download Zone Alarm for free, it's a great firewall
application. I also use Ad-aware, Spybot Search and Destroy and Pest
Patrol, all free for the taking.

Kevin ,
Did you think that AVG 6.0 was as good as Norton and the same time it is
free. I use AVG 6.0 (because I'm cheap) , but even with weekly updates it
let six viruses through including a nasty backdoor trojan. I had to use
Housecall to find and delete them. Beware of things that are free. Jym

If you connected to the internet prior to enabling a firewall you are
probably infected with a virus.
Search in this ng or google for svchost.exe for further instructions.
If you have a virus or failed install of Norton both could prevent a second
successful install. Once the svchost shut down error is cured go on line and
run a scan at www.symantec.com / security response. Once that is completed
and any virus cleaned, see again at symantec for 'how to completely remove
Norton. Once done install Norton as a clean install i.e. no other apps
running.
NB The Norton disk will not have current virus definitions, so may not find
the latest viri.

I am using also AVG 6.0 (I had Norton before it and I didn't find it worth
to waste money for it), and I haven't had any problems or virus infections
in my system. Almost every virus killers (commercial and free) have their
own flaws though. Norton get updates only once a week (every wednesday)...

Things, free or not free, do not keep you 100% safe. That's why user should
also THINK what he/she does. Simple things like:

- use firewall (and keep it updated also)
- keep windows UPDATED all the time.
- run regularly Spybot Search & Destroy (and keep it updated)
- run regularly Ad-Aware (and keep it updated)
- run regulary Spywareblaster (and keep it updated)
- use some virus killer all the time (and keep it updated)
- NOT open all attachment files from E-mails if don't know exactly WHAT they
are, even if they would be from known persons.
- NOT run/install just any junk they find from internet!
- NOT always mindlessly click "yes... yes... yes..." when get some POP-UP's
telling this or that in IE.
- use COMMON sense.

Those things should keep user away from harms way most of the time...
