My computer had WORM virus that I finally was able to fix.
However, I still have the problem wherein programs hang or
aborts. I see that Svchost.exe under SYSTEM is running
with almost 100 CPU utilization. If I end this process,
everything is working fine. How can I fix this so I won't
have to do this everytime?
Hope to hear from the experts.
Thanks,
Nel

What was the worm that you had and what AV software did you use to cure the problem ?
We need to be sure that your problem was originally fixed.
There are *many* infectors that target the SVCHOST.EXE file.

Part I

1) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
2) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
3) Using your AV software, perform a Full Scan of your platform and clean/delete any
infectors found
4) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform
5) Re-enable System Restore, reboot the PC
6) Create a new Restore point
7) Please report back your results

Part II

Right click on the file: C:\windows\system32\svchost.exe
Find the version information and then Copy and Paste into this information into your reply
to this message.

Please report back your results

I noticed the same thing, but with System Idle Process---
CPU 99. Are there any viruses which might cause this?

"System Idle Process" is not any problem at all. That's just the
name for what the system is doing when it's not doing anything.
It's there to make the total add up to 100%

That is the system 'twiddling its thumbs' when there is nothing whatever
else to do
