I currently have 11 of these running using up 118,000k. Are they all
necessary?

4 are for System
3 are for Network Service
4 are for Local Service

Thanks

11 of them is a little excessive however they are system processes. They
are mainly responsible for running the different services on your system.
The reason windows will utilize many of them is the same reason you are told
not to keep all your eggs in one basket.

Thanks Thomas and Justin. I'll check out the link and if I still have
questions I'll post again. I just think it's excessive, but let me look into
it.

I've looked at all of the services but am still confused. How do I know if I
need all of them running? For example there is a service that refers to
Telephony. I don't use the internal modem for dial-up or anything else and
it's not even connected to a phone line, so do I need that process running?
There are a bunch and I guess I'll have to Google them and see if I can glean
some info from that.

Thanks for that link Justin. Some pretty good hints there as to whether they
are necessary or not.

Depends on your setup and how much this issue is spread in your computer. I have 4 instances on my system and out of that none is running at present. Mine resides in the 1 in System32 ,1 in i386.and 2 in $NT Service Pack files.

So in essence I have only 1 that will be used at any time when called upon and is located in the System 32 file

I'm back down to 11. I have more then normal because of some hardware and
software I've installed.

Go to Windows Task Manager then go to the processes tab and click "Show
processes from all users". It's not possible to not have this process
running.

You can run the same app multiple times (if allowed by the app).

Like I said. There is only 1 that shows in my running processes. Then again I am using W2K3 SP2 Server

Interesting. I just checked all my W2K3 servers and they have that process
running 7 and more times.

Regardless of that anomaly, you made some claims that do not make sense to
me:

"I have 4 instances on my system and out of that none is running at
present."

None is running? Now 1 is running? Instances? I assume you are referring
to the actual file? How many times you find a file on your HDD has nothing
to do with the "maximum" amount of times that app can run.

Can you sort that column and take a screen shot? Then take a screen shot of
the services running on that machine?

After a quick scan I see three services that require their own instance of
svchost.exe and all of them are required system services. I'd be interested
in comparing services.
