It's perfectly normal to have several instances of Svchost.exe
running simultaneously.

However, if Svchost.exe is using a large portion of your CPU
cycles, as you report, it has most likely been "hijacked" by a worm or
Trojan. Have you tried using a decent antivirus application with the
most currently-available virus definition files? A strong candidate
would be W32.Welchia.Worm.

W32.Welchia.Worm a.k.a. W32/Nachi.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.welchia.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms can disable antivirus
applications whose definitions weren't up-to-date, try using one or
more of the free on-line scanners to double-check your system.

I had that once. If you look in the task manager, the svshost.exe that is
causing the problem will likely be listed in all caps (SVCHOST.EXE). If it is,
it is the W32 Welchia worm. I only realized that there was a problem because my
adsl modem was showing constant activity even when I was not using the internet.

I have tried running 3 different virus searches and nothing comes up. The longer my computer is on the more cpu usage the svchost.exe LOCAL SETTINGS is taking up. I have tried some of the things suggested and nothing seems to work. Someone please help!

I am having the same problem. The svchost.exe is showing high cpu. In the 90% range constantly from boot up. Here is what I have found out to date without fixing the problem. I ran a system process utility and learned that it is accessing the msvcrt.dll file heavily. This dll file is commonly used by the system, but there is something calling on it constantly. Comparing it to other PC's msvcrt.dll files, it has the same characteristics as mine.

Looking at other newsgroups, I have learned that it is a common problem. I have ran differnt anti-virus programs as well as several worm cleaning utilities and spyware removal programs. All came up clean. I have been going to the task manager and stopping the process. This seems to let me work on the computer normally until I go place it in standby mode. (I use a Compaq TC1000 Tablet PC in my job, and travel from customer to customer.) When the PC resumes the built in wireless card and the audio does not work. I am ready to restore to the original condition. Any help would be greatly appreiated. Thanks, John
