SVCHost.exe Freeze

I have noticed an unusual problem that I have never
experienced on any version of Windows. I will be in the
middle of something, then decide to load a separate
program (say internet explorer, outlook, notepad, or all
of the above). They won't load. I can click them as many
times I want, but to no avail. It just happened a few
minutes ago. No programs will load until I force the
computer to reboot (then right when Windows is shutting
down they all open at once). Although sometimes I can get
the programs (that aren't loading) to load if I open
Internet Explorer (when it does load). I went through my
task manager and started closing programs that had any
kind of memory usage over 3,000KB. I found multiple
instances of SVCHost.exe running. I closed the one with
14,000KB occupied. Immediately, all the programs that I
had clicked opened. It seems it had put them (programs)
in que until something was completed, although I don't
know what. It's really annoying. Especially, since I lost
all Windows XP feel (blue top bar, the red "X" to close
the window) So, I reboot, and everything is better. Any
ideas? I'm pretty sure I don't have a virus, since I have
it updated regularly and have done scans in the past.
It's really annoying, because when it does freeze up, not
a single program will start. I can make do with the other
programs that are currently open, but it is rather
annoying to have to reboot or find a program that will
launch the rest. I have tried to find out which programs
are in which groups of SVCHost.exe but since I don't have
XP Professional I can't see a very good list in CMD
Prompt. The registry's list is somewhat less than
appealing. I have also posted this message over a month
ago to XP General Newsgroup with the only response, "I
have that problem too."

It is not unusual to have several instances of svchost
running at the same time - at the moment I have 5 (4 show
00 CPU usage while 1 shows 02). However, svchost is also
used by some viruses - noteably blaster.

Advice re: blaster virus:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/blaster.htm

Also - search 'blaster virus' in Google

If blaster is not located on your computer then update and
run your anti-virus program.

I did search the internet for the blaster virus and
couldn't find anything related to the symptoms my
computer is facing. It doesn't reboot randomly. Programs
are just delayed sometimes (when the problem does occur)
from starting. I also did a full scan using Symantec
Antivirus with the latest virus definitions and found
nothing. I don't believe it is anything related to
viruses or bad files because I have had this problem off
and on since I've had the laptop (August 1st, 2003). I'm
wondering if it's something in XP that doesn't work well.
