After I have dialed-up on the Internet and worked online for a while, the
following error message appears:

"svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows"

I click on OK to close this error message, and my Windows 2000, SP4 PC
begins acting strangely - functions stop working in applications,
particlarly cut and paste and searching.
The only way to rectify the situation is to restart and keep off the
Internet.
I know there is a security fix for this, but am having trouble finding it.
Can anyone tell me where it is on the Microsoft site?

What type AVP do you have running?
Try this online Virus Scan
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/
Located in the center of page,, third one under virus definitions.
If it finds anything, you should print and go to Google, and enter search for the infection
name and look for Symantec's fix sheet, print it out. Afterward, perform line by line or it
will come back.

Please go to McAfee (http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/mfs/default.asp) and/or Trend
(http://housecall.antivirus.com ) and perform and online scan of your platform and report
back your results.
