Hi

Do you see any messages prior to the shutdown and are you using any
particular program when this happens? Have a look in the Event Viewer -
there may be an entry in there that could point towards the problem

Is it a laptop or desktop? What operating system is in it?

It could be an overheating issue. I have seen it with laptops. If you are
running Windows 2000 and there is a message stating that windows will shut
down showing a timer that is counting down, you might need to update the
service pack.

unexpected random PC shut down can have many causes.
here are a few ways to find the cause and fix it.

Check the event log for clues. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management. open
Event Viewer console tree, click system. find the error and do a goggle.

Overheating .. dust accumulation on the motherboard, in the power supply,
and on the CPU heatsink can be removed with compressed air.

Failing power supply... You need a mulitmeter to diagnose this problem, or
take it to a repair shop. A new 300W power supply can be had for as little
as $40.

Virus, or malware.... the W32.Korgo Worm can cause this problem, run
appropriate apps to find and remove.

Hi,
I'm having the same problems. I've checked my event logs - no errors. I've
run virus scans - no viruses. I have XP and all available updates have been
installed. I sincerely doubt there's that much dust on my motherboard, as
this is a fairly new computer (less than 6 months old). However, mine is a
laptop.

Any other ideas Jeff?

I should also mention that it does not restart. It just shuts down and I
have to restart the computer myself.

If no virus, or malware, I would start to lean more in the direction of
hardware. Get a copy of memtest86 http://www.memtest86.com/ . this is a
freeware RAM tester. You might have a bad dimm.
Here is another wild thought. Loose parts in the case can short out the
system. I worked on a system last year that had a loose screw lodged under
the motherboard causing random shutdown of the pc.
If your pc is only 6 months old you should get some support from the maker.
Motherboard, processor, and memory should all be under warranty.

Sorry I couldn't be more help

Yesterday my pc shutdown, I was in the other room, and when I went back to
the pc it was on the memory testing screen that you get when you switch on
the pc, it had fozen on the ide section, well I turned it off again, and when
it came back on the memory read *.
So I finally switched it off at the mains, and it started up fine.

I have noticed that my pc has been overheating lately, and it has been
dodgy since I bought it, wiped it to factory 3 times.

I am running xp home, all updates downloaded. AMD Athlon 2400+
Please help me?
