For the last couple of days I've been getting emails with
attachments from Microsoft announcing a "New Network
Patch". I'm worried about opening and installing this
because I have my system set to automatically download
Windows updates and I don't understand why this "Patch"
hasn't been delivered by that method. I wonder if its
safe to go ahead and install it or keep it in a folder
untill I get a good virus detector.

Thanks for any response.

It is a virus and not actually from Microsoft. Delete it.

Its a virus Percy, you should add it to your junk filter

.
Paul,

I am much obliged to you and Mike. I'm going to download
an anti-virus package from McAfee today. I assume it will
include one of those junk filters.
