Hi Neil,

chkdsk /r is the command you want. Start/run cmd, then run this command for
the drive you want (EG: chkdsk C: /r) and follow the prompts for it to run
after the system is rebooted (you can't do this while the drive is in use).

| how do I run a disk surface scan in windows XP? Is it
| called something else for XP?

when u want to do a scan go my computer -> right-click the drive u want to scan -> propeties -> tools -> error-checking -> check both boxes and tell it to scan. it will say that it needs to be done aftr a restart and it will ask u to schedule it, do that and restart the computer. it will do everything needed to ensure the disk is fine

Or it could be a example of how not to use the English language correctly.
Yikes it sounds like a line from a Rap music (I ate rap..) "song"

Hey michael,

This isn't a chat room. I recommend better grammar, proper
punctuation, proper capitalization, and dropping the chat-room-speak.
Otherwise very few people here will take you seriously, if they bother
to read your posts at all.

chkdsk /r is the command you want.

Even if it isn't what you want, it's all you got (on NTFS).
Start/run cmd, then run this command for the drive you want
(EG: chkdsk C: /r) and follow the prompts for it to run after the
system is rebooted (you can't do this while the drive is in use).

The problem is, you won't be prompted before it "fixes" errors, be
they file system logic (a ChkDsk /r implies ChkDsk /f as well) or
attempts to relocate failing clusters.

That hasn't been my mileage with "check for errors" via Properties,
Tools. In several PCs with several FAT16 and FAT32 volumes, these
tests found no errors at all, whereas a Scandisk done straight after a
proper shutdown found muiltiple file system logic errors.

With automated "trsut me" tools of this sort of quality, I'm not about
to trust NTFS, where such tools are all I'd have.
