Hi,
I have set the space before a Heading to 6pt to separate it more from the
preceding paragraph. How do I set it not to include the space before the
heading if the heading starts at the beginning of a page occasionally?

Do not see it on the compatibility list. Using W97, Win 98.
Thank you.
Patti

Space Before is always suppressed at the top of a page unless it follows a
manual page break or a section break. In some versions of Word (not 97, I
think), there is a Compatibility Option to suppress it even after hard page
and column breaks (but not section breaks). Depending on view, it may not be
obvious that the space is being suppressed, but it is.

Hi, Patti,

To quote my colleague Suzanne Barnhill,

"Space Before/After is automatically suppressed after/before soft
page breaks. You can also suppress it after manual page and column
breaks by checking the appropriate box on the Compatibility tab of
Tools | Options. There is no way to suppress it after section
breaks."

The appropriate box is "Suppress space before after a hard page or
column break", as described at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;166016.

I just experimented on this with my own Word 97 on Windows 98 by having
headings with big space (36 points) preceding the headings. In Normal
view the space is there. In Page View and Print Preview, it is not. So
when you print the document, it seems that Word does suppress those
spaces if they're at the start of a page. That's a neat feature I had
never noticed before.

Hi Jay,
Your quote from Suzanne re "suppressed after/before SOFT page breaks"
answers my question. I have tried not to have any hard page breaks and the
""Suppress space before after a hard page or column break", as described at
mention SOFT page breaks so I was confused.

I read http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/CreateATemplatePart2.htm
which says there is a bug in Word's pagination rules, etc.... which seems to
contradict Susanne but I will take here word for it.
Thanks for your help.
