"how do i sum positive and negative values separately"
so i end up with two totals of a column

=SUMIF(range,"<0")
=SUMIF(range,">0")

Pretend your data is in A1:A100
=SUMIF(A1:A100,">0")
=SUMIF(A1:A100,">0")
