Suddenly, plugging in USB camera does NOT trigger dialog box.

Hosh

Thanks for reading!

Up until very recently, I plug the camera into the USB port and the Windows
dialog box pops up and asks what I want to do:
Copy to a folder, View a slideshow, Print, etc. etc.

Now, I plug in the camera and the computer acknowledges it and a new drive
shows up and I can deal with it that way.

I really liked the other way because when it downloaded from the camera, it
gave me the option to name the folder as well as delete them from my camera
upon completion.
How do I re-enable this feature?

All of this seemed to happen right after installing SP2 - related or not, I
don't know.

I had the same problem (SP2, couldn't get scanner recognized) and
googled for the diagnostic message: turns out that the USB hub service
was going "idle" and I just had to patch the registry to stop that.

Hi Hosh,

Thank you for posting here.

You can try the following suggestion.

- From the [Control Panel] click on [Scanners and Cameras] and select
the camera that is connected.
- From the right-click menu select [Properties]. The Properties Dialog
box will open.
- Select the [Events] tab.
- Set [Select an event] to [Default], and set [Start this program] to
[Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard].
- Set [Select an event] to [(name of camera) Connected], and select
[Take no action].
- Click [OK] to complete the settings.

Please note that camera may not work properly if connected to a USB hub or
if another USB device is connected at the same time.

You can also try to uninstall the software and drivers and then reinstall
from the Camera installation CD.

Wish it helps.

Bob Qin

Hi Bob Qin,
I have a sort've similar problem. Pre-SP2 Windows would decect my Canon
DV Camcorder and install the drivers as soon as it was connected.
Post-SP2's installation it no longer even detects the hardware, not even
via the Add New Hardware Wizard. I tried then Scanner and Camera
Wizard, but it wasn't listed there. Canon never supplied me with a
driver CD as it was always as simple as just plugging it in.

Any suggestions?

Do your usb ports work for other devices? Many people are reporting
problems with usb devices not working after installing sp2

Hi Elan,

You can try to unplug all the USB devices and uninstall USB controller.
Then restart computer wait until USB controllers get installed properly in
device manager, now connect the USB camera.

What is the result?

Thanks to both of you.
What I ended up doing was to remove all the usb items in device manager,
refresh them all and everything began to work again just as it had been
before SP2.
Funny though, even as everything appears to be fixed, the camera does not
show up in Scanners and Cameras even when plugged in. I can't say this is
abnormal as I don't believe I've ever noticed one way or another.
Is this acceptable?

Thanks!
Hosh

Hi Hosh,

Would you please let me know the detailed information about your camera
(manufacture, model)?

When you plug the camera into computer, is it shown in Device manager?

If it is there, please uninstall it from Device Manager, and uninstall the
camera software. Then reinstall the software from the Camera installation
CD.

What is the result?
