3 XP Pro computers in an office. We were sharing files and printers with no
problems. Browsing the internet was working great. All 3 are plugged
direct into a DSL/Cable Router that connects to the internet.

All of the sudden the 3 pc's will not talk to each other. All 3 can still
browse the interent but if you try to connect from one to the other you get
messages like "'Computer Name' is not accessible".

Nobody has been changing configurations and/or otherwise playing with the
network.

The only changes we are aware of our the automatic windows updates.

Anybody else had similar problems?

Thanks, Tom

ps. My son had the same problem in his house the other day so I'm thinking
it has to be related to windows updates but I could be wrong.

Are you running any software firewalls on any of the computers?

Software firewalls are well known to change settings without the user
telling it to. I've seen this thousands of times when I did Technical
Support for Windows 98, Windows ME, & the Microsoft Broadband Networking
Hardware.

If you are running Software firewalls You might try uninstalling them.
Also remember if you are using PC-cillian that the antivirus software is
a firewall. One last note when you uninstall ZoneAlarm (the last time I
worked with that software) it leaves the screwed up settings so that you
still have the problem you had before uninstalling it.

Tom,

Actually, there have been a few posts here recently which mentioned recent
Windows Updates. Google in this group, and you may get some specifics.
Unfortunately, Windows Updates being conducted at the convenience and discretion
of the owner, it's hard to be specific.

And it could well be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or similar
possibilities.

It ended up being our friend "McAfee". Along with Norton, these two
problems are far more damaging that all the spyware in the world. McAfee is
off the system and everything is fine.

That's not the first time for McAfee. But please, learn what the problem was,
or use another firewall, like Windows Firewall. Firewalling individual
computers is not unnecessarily redundant.
