I cannot remember installing anything recently which could have caused this,
but where should I look for items affecting shutdown? I've had Vista
Ultimate running for almost two months and it just started to take a long
time to shutdown on Friday.

Thanks!

Try defragging your disk and do a disk clean up.

To run the Windows Defragmentation program:

a.. Click on the Start button.
b.. Click on "Control Panel".
c.. Click on "System and Maintenance".
d.. Under "Administrative Tools" click on "Defragment your hard drive".
e.. If User Account Control prompts you for consent, click on "Continue".
f.. In the "Disk Defragmenter" window click on "Defragment now".
You can close the window as Windows will continue defragmenting in the
background. This process can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours
depending on the fragmentation.
