sudden slow down

Running windows xp (home edition).
I might have clicked on something bad.
In the last 24 hours, my computer is taking
a _LONG_ time to turn on from power off.
It also does not want to shut down.
(I have to pull the battery)

my question...
What is the name of the log file that keeps
track of turn on and shut down errors?

Perhaps if I knew what was causing the delay,
I could live without it.
Thanks,
Charles

I forgot to mention that there is a _lot_ of
HD thrashing when the computer is suppose to be
shutting down.

I think I found the answer to my only previous
question

administrative tools
