subtotal levels

I am working with a large spreadsheet and need to make subtotals. The
subtotal lines are appearing on the spreadsheet but the levels are not
appearing to the left of the number lines. How do I see the levels so I can
use them?

This worked for the spreadsheet I was on. Now do you know how to make it work
all the time without having to go to tools|options|view tab|check Outline
symbols? I am using excel 2003

That's the default status for me (also xl2003).

If you start a new workbook, add some test data, then do data|subtotals, do you
see the outlining symbols?

Maybe someone turned them off for the workbooks that you're using.

They must be turned off because I have to do these steps on every worksheet.
Do you know how to turn them on permenantly?

You can create a new workbook template and save it in your XLStart folder.

Name it Book.xlt and do as much formatting as you want as well as changing this
setting for each worksheet in that template

In xl2003, a new workbook will be created when you click on the New Icon on the
standard toolbar.

Create another workbook in the same folder, but name it Sheet.xlt. This
template is used when you add a worksheet to an existing workbook.

You could also record a macro when you make the change manually. Then just
rerun this macro whenever you need it.

another software and exporting to excel. I will just have to do the
additional steps in the exported documents. Thank you so much for your

Are you using crystal reports and exporting to excel? I use crystal to
export data from my accounting software and then export to excel to
manipulate the data. I have to copy the data to a new worksheet to get the
level bars to show.
