When copying a cell with mixed format

i.e. H2O with the 2 in subscript is in cell A1,

If another cell contains =A1 the subscript format on the 2 is lost and H2O
is displayed. Is there anyway other than copy and paste to retaing the
formatting?

The short answer is no. You have to copy the cell. Formulas return values.
They do not return formats.

You could copy the formatted cell as a *picture*, therefore displaying it
with it's formats.

Select the formatted cell, and from the Menu Bar,
Hold <Shift> and click on EDIT.

This gives you a slightly different drop down window.

Click on "Copy Picture", then <OK>, then paste anywhere.
