I set Word as my mail editor. Somehow, it has selected a style named
"joe" (my first name) as the default style. I don't mind that, but it
won't let me edit it. Actually, it will let me edit it, but the edits
don't stick. The next time send an email, the old settings are back.

How can I edit this "joe" style or change to one that I can edit.

Thanks

Search for the email.dot template and open it in Word -- modify it to your
liking and that should fix your e-mail style issue.

Search turned up 2 copies of email.dot.

One of them is located at "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\1033". I opened it in Word. The style that was showing
was "Normal". I opened the style pulldown looking for the "joe" style
that seems to be the default for email messages.

I changed the Normal font to 14 pt (from 10) and saved it. I opened an
email message and the default style was still "joe". I tried to change
to Normal, but it wouldn't let me do it.

Where is this "joe" style coming from and how can I either edit it or
replace it with one that I can edit?

The other email.dot is at
"C:\LIBRARY\Software\Office\PRO\disk1\PFILES\MSOFFICE\OFFICE\1033".
That one will only open a read-only so I can't change it.

OK. I found KB article # 243970. It shows in detail how to do what you
suggest -- I think. I tells me how to set the "writing style" but not
how to change the default template used by Outlook.

My Outlook is using a style template named "joe" (my first name). I
have no idea how that was created. I certainly did not do it. I would
like to get rid of it and replace it with a Normal.dot that I can
modify. Ideally, it would be the same Normal.dot that I use for Word
itself, or one just like it.

Thanks

Are you saying that you think your Outlook is using a file called "joe.dot"
as your WordMail template? I didn't think that was possible, so why do you
think this is the case? As far as I know, Email.dot is the template being
used, and you'd have to edit the styles within that template -- delete the
"joe" style if it's causing you problems. I don't think you can choose a
different WordMail template to use.

No. I have no idea what template Outlook is using. How can I check
that?

When I type C-S-M to start an email message, Outlook starts Word and
the Style that is selected is names "joe". I have opened every
email.dot template that I could find and none of them have a style
named "joe". I even created "joe" styles in the email.dot templates to
see if that would work and it had no effect as far as I can tell.

How can I tell what template Outlook is loading for Word?

Thanks

Have you tried renaming all the Email.dot templates so that Outlook/Word
(I'm not sure which) will create a new one next time you run WordMail? You
can look in Normal.dot and see if the Joe style exists there, but I don't
think WordMail in Office 2000 uses Normal.dot (later versions do, and
Email.dot is no longer used...from what I understand.)

Oh, and when I said "E-mail.dot is the template being used", I meant that's
the name of the template that's always used...I don't think there is a way
to specify a different template for WordMail.

OK. I did a search for "email.dot". Search found 2 copies of
"email.dot", 1 copy of "blankemail.dot", and 4 shortcuts to these in
variuous "recent" folders.

I first closed Outlook.

I then renamed both of "email.dot" templates to "email.dot.tmp" and
the "blank email.dot" to "blank email.dot.tmp".

I then restarted Outlook and opened an email. The "joe" style was
still selected. I then did another search. No new "email.dot"
templates were created.

I then rebooted the computer, redid the search, and deleted all of the
"email.dot", "blank email.dot", and all shortcuts. Search then show no
hits.

I then restarted Outlook and the "joe" style was still there. Search
did not find any "email.dot" templates or shortcuts.

I also started Word and could not fnd any "joe" styles anywhere.

Any other ideas?

I'm stumped, then. You might want to try posting to a Word group and see if
they can help you figure this one out. Good luck.
