Ok,

I have this scanner that is not recognized by windows xp
pro. I went to the scanner's website and downloaded
the 'xp' driver installer. When I ran the installer, it
just crapped a bunch of files in my system32 directory
without prompting me. I am afraid that a bunch of
important system files were overwritten with older
versions of this damn installer. Will 'Windows Update'
recognize if there are older versions of certain .dll
or .sys or other important files on my computer? How can
I be sure that this dumbass installer did not overwrite
important files? Any help is appreciated.

Microsoft has just what you need, and it's already included in Windows XP.
It's called the System File Checker ("sfc" for short) and it checks to see
if key system files have been deleted or replaced with incorrect versions.

You can read about sfc in the Help and Support Center, but for now this is
what you need to know:

Go to Start > Run and in the text box type: sfc /scannow, then click on the
OK button. You'll need to have your Windows XP install CD handy. The System
File Checker will scan your 'protected files' and ask you for the XP CD if
it needs to replace any files.
