We have a new pc, running Windows XP home (not pro, I guess it's called
"home"). Sometime when I just move the mouse over something, it gets
selected, as if I had clicked on it. What attribute is this? How can I
turn it off? Is it, perchance "PalmCheck"? If not, what is "PalmCheck" on
the "touchpad" tab of the mouse maitenance window?

Open My Computer and select Tools/Folder Options/General Tab.

Under "Click Items as follows" select the second option, "Double-click to open an item (single-click to select).
Apply/OK.

No, that's not exactly what I mean. Things are opening and such without any
click at all. I like the single click approach. But I don't like folders
opening and such if I just linger too long with the mouse over them.

Open Control Panel / Mouse and look at the settings for the touchpad. There should be a setting for "touch to click" (or similar wording). This feature may be set too sensitive and may be causing this behavior.
