Student version holding me back?

I have the student version of MS Outlook, and am missing a few items. One is
the out of office messaging option, another is the ability to respond to
meeting invitations, and the most important is that I'm not able to send
emails out from outlook when I'm not hooked up directly to my home DSL line.

I can receive emails in my outlook inbox, but can't send them when connected
to the internet either through an outside modem or wirelessly. Is this due
to my particular DSL provider or is it due to the version of outlook that I
have?

All versions of Outlook are the same in either packaged offering so Outlook
is not the limitation here.

1) You don't have an out of office assistant when you do not connect to an
Exchange server as it is an Exchange feature Outlook taps into.
2) The issues with sending can be either caused by your ISP hosting your
mailbox or the ISP you have your Internet connection with at that time when
working remotely. First try setting the authentication option in your SMTP
server settings in the More Settings... dialog. Otherwise ask your current
Internet provider what the local SMTP server settings are and use that
server instead.

Thanks for the response. Can you help me understand the Exchange server
concept? I'm not sure I understand what it is and/or how to connect to it.

Mailbox access is provided in several ways which also depend on the mail
server it is being hosted on. This can either be POP3, IMAP, HTTP, Exchange,
etc...

What type of mail account do you have?
