Stuck in installation loop

We were having some problems with AOL so I set the system to do a retore for
one week previous. When it was done, the computer stopped booting. It goes
through all the startup, including the WinXP Pro logo, but just before the
little "windows loading" music thing, the screen goes black. The mouse
pointer is visible and reponsive.

I have started it in all the different safe modes, and nothing. My next
step was to try to do an autorecovery, nothing. Then, I put in the Win XP cd
to repair windows and about 2/3 of the way through, it stopped and said
"manifest parse error, invalid at the top level of the document" When I
looked that up it said that the CD is corrupt (?). It is a copied CD (we're
overseas and the original is home). Now the computer is stuck in a loop to
try and finish the installation.

I downloaded Microsoft's emergency boot disks and created the floppies (on
our laptop) and that gave me an error too (I thought it was going to work, bc
we got to the 3rd floppy)- txtsetup.?

Is there anything else I can do? We're waiting for someone to mail us the
original XP disk, but there are files I need to get for work. Our drive is
FAT 32, and partitioned. The D: drive is where all the files are. I tried
connecting the computers with a serial link, but the dead one has to not be
dead for the files transfer wizard to function.

Can I download the automated system recovery disk from somewhere? HELP!!
Thanks in advance!
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,

You can't download an ASR disk, it is something you would have had to
create. For now, your quickest method of getting to the needed files would
be to remove the hard drive and install it as a slave in a functioning
machine. Then just copy off what you need.
