Stubborn Directories: Need help

Hi, I hope somebody out there can help me with this:

I just bought a new computer, it came loaded with Windows XP. The
root directory of my C:\ drive contains two directories named
something like (these are no the actual names, I'm not at my home
computer right now):

86bf86235fa56d86bc
9005fg76ab234fabd1

Inside those two directories there is only one directory named:

SP2
(that is C:\86bf86235fa56d86bc\SP2)

While I'm able to open the top two directories (or change their names)
I cannot access the internal directories (SP2). I get a message
"Access is denied". So I can't open them, I can't rename them, worse,
I can't erase them. The Dell support people were useless (but it did
took me 4 hours of telephone waiting time and 5 different tech support
guys to conclude that).

Now, I'm logged in with administrator rights. I booted the computer,
turned it on in Safe Mode as administrator and that didn't work
either. I reviewed the properties, make sure they weren't protected
somehow (though the only options were Read Only/Hidden) neither of
which should stop me from erasing them anyway.

The size of the directories is 0 bytes, so really, there isn't any
problem, it's just annoying and I want them gone... how can I delete
those?

Does anybody out there have any ideas (shorter of course of
re-installing the whole thing again, I don't hate those two
directories that much).

It's a Pentium 2.8 Mhz with 1Gb RAM and 120Gb Hard Drive running XP.
The only other software that was installed at the time was the stuff
that comes with the new Dell computers (Wordperfect instead of MS
Office) and all the other free junk. I hadn't done anything to the
computer, the directories where already there, since I have installed
my software with no problems.

Thanks for the help,

Tony

Those are directories related to updates installed from the
Windows Update web site. Just leave those directories alone
and ignore them.

Same problem and after upgrade to XP Pro, I now have 7 of those type
folders.
My computer is a Dell and tech support tells me they must stay. Something
new with the latest Windows XP versions.
I run XP Pro on an older similar system and those folder do not exist.
Hope they fix it.

Hello Tony,
Are the drives FAT or NTFS?
If the drives are NTFS you may have to ownership of the files before you
can delete them.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=810881
These are temp folders that are used when installing service packs,
hotfixes, updates from Windows Update?
try also running chkdsk. If there is some file-folder corruption and that
will prevent you from deleting them.
Did you try to delete while you were in Safe Mode?
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Thanks Darrell, after starting XP in SAFE MODE, then I can access the
security tab/advance option, take ownership and presto...the suckers
are gone and the computer is working fine.

Thanks to all who responded
