I've got a strange video problem lately. when i want to watch a dvd, or a
vcd or svcd (mpeg1&2), which i usually do using PowerDVD 6.0, but have also
tested with Mediaplayer 9.0 and PowerDVD 5.0, the program i use will always
crash. I have to reboot and then everyhting works fine. I can then watch
those video files no problem.

What do you guys think might cause this ?

Thanks for the input !

Sjoerd.

Hi Sjoerd,

To determine what driver is causing the problem I need you to enable driver
verifier.
Steps:
1) Windows Key + R
2) Type in 'verifier' and hit enter
3) Make sure 'Create Standard Setting' is selected and hit next
4) Click on 'Select all drivers installed on this computer' and hit Finish
5) Reboot

There is a possibility that your computer will crash on reboot. If this
occurs hit F8 when rebooting just before the windows logo screen and select
the safe mode boot option. Follow the same steps above but on step 4 choose
'Select driver names from a list'; hit next; check the box next to any
driver where the provider is not Microsoft; hit Finish; reboot.

This will slow the performance of you computer a little while enabled but
will hopefully catch the driver causing corruption. Next time you crash
the blue screen will hopefully say something like
"DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION". If this occurs please send the
corresponding minidump (by default it is at c:\windows\Minidump ) my way.
If you have any questions or I didn't explain something well enough don't
hesitate to e-mail me back. Good Luck,

Your Virtual Memory (Page File) is set too low. You should increase it to
about
1 1/2 times your RAM. Go to:
Start/Control Panel/System/Advanced tab/Performance/settings/
advanced tab/Virtual Memory/change setting to
Ini - 1 1/2 times RAM
Max - 3 times RAM
Click Set

first off, thanks a lot for your answer,

Maybe it wasn't all to clear, but just PowerDVD freezes, it's not entire XP
crahsing.

Does this same advice still count then ?

first off, also thanks a lot for your answer,

I checked, but the virtual memory was set to 1152, being exactly 1,5 times
the size of my RAM.

do you maybe have antorher idea of what it might be ?

Hi Sjoerd,

You can download and install the debug tools from
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx . Next
open a CMD window and change to the directory the tools installed to. You
can then run the following command from the debug tools install directory in
the CMD window: cscript adplus.vbs -crash -pn #### -q. Replace the ####
with the name of the PowerDVD exe. This will create a process dump that can
be analyzed offline. You can send me the output dump file and I'll look at
it and see if it gives me anything to go on.
