Strange thing just happened

I was trying to figure out something in OUTLOOK and I lost every newsgroup
from all news servers in Outlook Express even though Outlook Express wasn't
even open. The newsgroup accounts themselves were however left.

I deleted nothing during this figuring/experimenting in Outlook.

A search for DBX files resulted in nothing being found for the newsgroups
and the Recycle Bin was empty.

XP Home Edition
Office 2000
Outlook Express 6
Windows Explorer 6

Anti virus software up-to-date and no viruses.

Any ideas of what might have happened?

Might you have had Background Compacting enabled? It's a known
troublemaker.

If OL is your default Mail Client, you'll have a much more dependable
newsgroup life if you use the Outlook Newsreader, accessed via OL View>Go
to>News. (Yes, it's a poorly disguised Outlook Express but...) Having this
News option available in later versions of OL requires some configuring.
