Strange Symbols

We have several Word documents which are not opening correctly. When we open
them, instead of text there are symbols on all the pages where the text
should be. The other bizarre thing is that all the documents with this
problem show the same modification date and time if you look at their
properties. Is there any way to recover the text in these documents so they
can be used?
