when i copy in A4-500 or A4-1000 it works fine only this specific number.

also it doesnt mater how the cell is format before copying it always over

to the A4-1500 i copied in

That is, indeed, a very strange one.

For some reason, when you type in A4-1500 (as well as some other strings),
Excel is both interpreting the value as a date and formatting it into Arabic!

I can't believe this is deliberate.

One work around is to either pre-format the cell as TEXT, or precede the entry
with a single quote. The single quote will not show up in the cell, although
you will see it in the formula bar. It tells Excel to treat the entry as text.

Thanks ron

but i am copying in bulk and have to return to that one cell every time i am
currently using the apostrophie to make it text.

i have tried it on a colleagues computer and it does not auto format so
there must be a way to turn it off

Can you format the cell as TEXT before you copy into it?

Yeah, thanks for finding that, Ron.

I have experienced this before and could not figure out how to stop it so I
just resigned myself to preceding the entry with an apostrophe.

You're welcome. I was motivated to research that when it occurred on my
machine, and Max wrote that it did not occur on a colleague's machine.
