strange noises and a missing file: proret.msi

When I boot Windows on my Inspiron laptop, I get a series of beeps after the Dell screen fades and before the Windows screen appears. These beeps vary in number from 2 to 21.

When Windows does load, the Windows installer window pops up and sets about to install. It can't find the file it's looking for "proret.msi" on any of the XP discs I have. In addition to this, when I load Word the Windows Installer pops up again in attempts to reinstall word, though the program is there. At the same time, the program *has* disappeared off my start menu and desktop

Thanks for your help
Dana

The beep codes are form BIOS telling you the specific problem. Listen to the number of beeps as well as the duration (long beep or short beep). The most common issues are a loose chip, poor connection, or a bad part. Start with first two if you're comfortable opening your machine. Also, you're title about strange noises caught my eye. This is BAD news...probably for your hard drive. Good luck!!!

A single beep when starting your computer is all you should hear. Anything
else indicates a hardware problem.

proret.msi would be found on your Office disc (not Windows disc).

You may want to check with the Office newsgroups for more info, but I would
try using a repair install (Help \ Detect and Repair)

Did you get any joy with your inquiry re PRORET.MSI? I have jus
downloaded Service Pack 3 for Office but it will not install because i
is looking for the same non-existant file on my system.

Any suggestions where I can find it or what to do now?

Here's some info..

To install SP3 without the original Office XP CD

When installing SP3, you may be prompted to insert one or more of your
original Office XP CD-ROMs. If you do not have access to your original
Office XP CD-ROM you can install Office XP SP3 Full File Version (58925 KB).
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete installation. Note: Some
users will still be prompted for the original CD when using the Office XP
SP3 Full File Version, depending on your installation of Office XP. For more
information, please see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article, (828451)
OFFXP: Why Service Packs, Updates, and Security Patches May Require the
Office XP CD-ROM.
