strange formatting problem

I have a strange problem with word, that if I put in page numbers it doesn't
show the page number but "{PAGE\*MERGEFORMAT}
Also when I try to insert a reference from endnote it gives the same
problem, and I can't even copy and paste the unformatted citation because
when I copy it to the text box it turns back into a formatted page number or
reference.
everything is also ok with powerpoint (slide numbers) and excel.
what could be the problem?

You only need to toggle field codes. To do this, press Alt+F9.

Fields can be in two modes: they can show the result, i.e. the content that
will print, or they can show the code behind. Alt+F9 toggles field codes on
and off.
